5 Ways to Save Money on Your Wardrobe

I’m always on top of finding deals when it comes to acquiring clothing for my kids. It helps that children’s clothing is typically less expensive, however it’s also become second nature to me to really dig for the best bargain. While I typically feel successful in saving money on their clothing, I’m not always as great at saving money when shopping for myself. I’m not sure why. I mean, I’ll patiently scour a clearance rack of 4T, but about three sweaters into a clearance rack of my own size, and I’m done!

However, I’ve made saving money a priority this year, and saving on clothing is really pretty simple as long as you’re willing to put in a little effort. Here are five ways to save money on your wardrobe this year.

1.  Evaluate Your Current Wardrobe

Before you even begin shopping, start with an evaluation of your current closet. This is a good opportunity to take stock of the clothing items you currently have, while coming up with a list of what you need and want. Also, it’s always entertaining to discover just how many black sweaters you actually own. Or, is that just me?

Taking an inventory of your closet and assessing your specific wardrobe needs will give you a more focused approach when shopping for yourself. This way you’ll be less likely to buy unnecessary or impulse clothing items.

2.  Shop Sales and Search for Discounts

In my opinion, there is never reason to pay full retail price. Nine times out of 10 there is a store wide sale, a coupon, or a discount you can use. You can sign up for sale and coupon email alerts from your favorite stores and brands. Additionally, there’s a huge selection of mobile apps designed to help you search for coupon codes on the spot.

In addition to shopping sales and taking advantage of discount codes, I’ve also had luck finding my favorite brands at deep discounts at factory and outlet stores. Also, while it’s slightly depressing to buy shorts in late September, stocking up during end of season sales is a great way to find clothing at its lowest price.

3.  Shop Used

There are a ton of great local options for finding gently used clothing. Check out your local thrift store, consignment shop, or garage sale. Sometimes you have to search a little harder at these places, but the price is always worth the hunt. Also, some used clothing stores, like Goodwill, are actually super organized.

4.  Organize a Clothing Swap

The idea of hosting a Moms only clothing swap with my friends has been floating around in my mind for awhile. Imagine scoring new gear for free while hanging out with your friends. What could be better?!

5.  Limit New Purchases

Obviously the best way to save money is by not spending it in the first place. When considering a new purchase ask yourself if you really need it. Not too long ago I was lusting after a pair of boots in a certain catalog. I tore out the page with the boots and held on to it for a few months. Every so often I’d look at the picture and gauge my interest. Eventually I lost interest in the boots, and tossed the picture. Waiting it out saved me $229.

What are your favorite ways to save money on clothing for yourself?

  1. I shop at Plato’s Closet for higher end items like designer jeans (have scored a pair of Paige Denim and Joe’s jeans for less than $40) and ski gear. I also constantly browse Thread up for clothing for me and my daughter.
