We know, we’ve been there. (In fact, we are still there!) We’re moms too and we know how hard it is to find time to exercise and take care of yourself. But here’s what we’ve learned personally and witnessed with many of our clients: if you make time to take care of yourself, your whole family benefits. The benefits of exercise are innumerable – you feel happier, you have more energy, you sleep better, your body moves freely, you build confidence, you set a good example for your children, and you are HEALTHIER! Don’t underestimate your value as a healthy, active woman to your family.
Exercise and health is a long term investment in you and your family. Here are some tips to help you think about how to find a workout regime that works for you.
Tips for getting back in shape:
• Find the right gym/workout for you.
If you’re just getting back to working out, spend some time researching gyms/studios and thinking about what kind of place and workout works best for you. Talk to the trainers; get a feel for the culture of the gym. Make sure it is a place that feels comfortable.
• Set Realistic Goals
When you find a place that seems to fit, spend some time thinking about what you want to do: one push up from your toes, tone enough to fit into last winter’s jeans, lose 10 pounds, whatever makes sense to you. Write these goals down and even tell someone else. Look at your goals regularly to keep you on track.
• Stick to it!
Start viewing your exercise regime as a part of your non-debatable routine like combing your hair or brushing your teeth. Find three times that work for you during the week; arrange a sitter, find a gym with childcare. Write those times down in your calendar, and STICK TO IT.
• Be Accountable
Find ways to keep yourself accountable while having some fun too. Some ideas include: find a workout buddy to exercise with; tell a family member or friend which days you’ll be working out so he/she can help encourage and motivate you; reward yourself with something special when you’ve hit some milestones for yourself.
• Focus on the Positive
Make a list for yourself of all the benefits you know you’re getting when you exercise – you feel happier, you have more energy, you sleep better, your body moves freely, you have more confidence, etc. Then remind yourself of these benefits when you think you might want to skip your workout.
• Just Do It
Ok, we didn’t come up with this slogan but we know it works. Don’t think about it, just do it. Thinking about going to the gym burns exactly 0 calories! Don’t be one of those people who come up with every excuse to justify not being in shape. JUST DO IT. You’ll be glad you did.
