We Vermonters are pretty lucky. We have a lot of amazing local photographers to choose from. Since becoming a mom, I have worked with several and there’s a reason my family continues to go back to Mae Memories Photography over and over.
When I was pregnant with Augie (my second child) the photographer I used for my newborn photos for Caroline (my daughter) was no longer practicing photography professionally so I went on the hunt to find the perfect person to capture Augie’s earliest moments. I first met Maegan Laurie at a BVTMB event (before I owned it!) while she was photographing a Little Yogis Playdate with Evolution Yoga. She captured some of my most favorite pictures of Caroline during that time. I then met her again when she was the photographer for a photo shoot with Poe Wovens while Caroline and I were models. Again, I was so impressed by her ability to capture Caroline’s joy, and she was so easy to work with.
I spoke with friends and Mae Memories came highly recommended. I decided to take the plunge and not only contact her about newborn photos but to also for my maternity photos! Maegan Laurie of Mae Memories Photography is located in Bristol, VT and serves both Addison and Chittenden Counties. Mae’s work and expertise focus primarily on birth, newborns, children, and families. If you book her for maternity photos, there is no way you won’t also want her to do newborn and any other milestone photographs soon after. Her talent is undeniable. Since my maternity sessions and Augie’s newborn photo session, we have hired Mae for family photos/Augie’s 1-year photos and BurlingtonVT Moms Blog has partnered with Mae the last two years for our Holiday Party and Pictures with {or without} Santa.

Here’s Why:
- Mae is a mom. During every photoshoot, but especially during Augie’s newborn session, she was so reassuring and flexible, because she gets it. You need to stop to nurse, the baby pees all over something, big sister will not cooperate at all, or you can’t have the dream family photos you want (because of big sister.) Mae makes it work and doesn’t seem flustered by anything.
- Mae is amazing with kids. This might be one of the most important things for me. Mae was able to get a very stubborn 2-year-old to smile during my maternity photos by singing, dancing, and talking about gummy bears on her head. I try to use her tricks when I want to get the right photo, but it’s not the same. She has a magic about her, and kids know it. It’s why we will keep begging her to come back for our Holiday Party year after year.
- Mae takes AMAZING photos. Like no kidding. She has talent. She has an eye. She sees something that I don’t see and captures the most special moments. I literally have Mae’s photos blown up all over my house because she has been able to capture the love between me and my husband, the last special moments between me and Caroline before Augie’s arrival, Caroline and Augie’s love for one another… and so much more.
- I mentioned it above but Mae is super flexible and laid back. She takes the time to understand your vision and is willing to meet you wherever you want or to give suggestions of locations. She seems to be able to make any setting, under any circumstances work. For my maternity photos, we tried to get the best lighting which ended up not being the right time of day for Caroline. She was a mess and cried through the whole session. Mae still somehow got some really special photos with Caroline included but afterward, she offered to meet again a week later to redo the session. For a hormonal mom, who cried after the first session, words still cannot describe how grateful I was.
- Mae gives timelines and she sticks to them. So important! The last two years for the BVTMB Holiday Party, Mae has gotten us photos just days after the event even though she promised them within a week. For all of my personal photo sessions with her, I have never grown frustrated waiting for our pictures the way I have with others.
- Mae is affordable and worth every penny. I can’t speak to all photographers but I know Mae charged me half of what I would have paid for our first newborn photographer if I hadn’t won the photo shoot and then I didn’t have to pay for the pictures separately. Her session fee includes a certain number of photos and you have the right to print!
- Mae offers mini sessions a few times a year. During a mini session, you get a discounted rate and show up at a predetermined location for a short period of time and are guaranteed a certain number of photos. I have several friends who have taken advantage of one of these sessions and have loved it!
