Mommy Must Haves: A few things, maybe more…

Here is the truth of the matter:  You don’t need much for a newborn baby.  Milk, clothing, diapers, a place to sleep, and a fair amount of free time on your hands and you are set.  Nearly everything else is for your convenience as a mother, and that is important too!  I swore I wouldn’t get bogged down with all the stuff, so for a while I feverishly deflected all the stuff that came at me.  Then the stuff started to speak.  The perfect shade of pink paired with brown for modernity and I’m all like, “I would have designed this look myself if I had…um…ever designed anything.”  Oh, and the owls for Pete’s sake.  I have never seen a taloned bird of prey look so darn cute.

Here are some things that you must have.  I mean, if you want.  You know, you don’t have to have them.  Except the Maya Wrap.  And the video monitor
  • A name that is locker room tested.  For instance, not Pilot Inspektor or Moxie CrimeFighter.
  • A really high pain tolerance for nursing.  Or these gel pads are awesome.  I rotated them from fridge to nursing bra around the clock.
  • A freezer full of dinners that will last the first two months and/or a village who will organize dinners for you.  Check out Meal Train.
  • Something to carry that baby around in AND a stroller.  My first kid lived in a Maya Wrap.  By the second kid, my back couldn’t handle it anymore and I used an Ergo.

  • Like I said, AND a stroller.  You should know that I am unbending in my belief in the BOB as the perfect stroller. Well, unless you ever want to take it indoors because, I’ll tell you, this guy is brutal in narrow aisles.  It is light weight to push, handles uneven pavement and trails like a champ, and has great accessories.

  • Leg Warmers.  You have never seen such adorableness before.

  • Half a dozen light weight blankets. These waffle weave are my favorite for swaddling in the tiny stage.  They are very stretchy so you can get a tight swaddle that holds.

  • But these muslin blankets are the best all around in my opinion because of the weight and large size.

  • Video monitor.  I know this is a splurge, but it’s great for that first year (and beyond) peace of mind.  Plus, it is  cute to watch the little pal pulling up for the first time and doing all those secret baby things.
  • If you cloth diaper, here are my tried and tested must have items:

–2 dozen all in one diapers like these Bumgenius.
image
–A dozen inserts for nighttime extra absorbency.
–Wool soakers for nighttime and for extra cuteness. image
–Trash can with a flip lid.
–2 Waterproof can liners.
–A million cloth wipes like these inexpensive terry cloth ones.
–Wipes container with solution to soak the wipes (warm water, sweet almond oil, essential oil, for example).
Charlie’s Soap for washing.
–2 Wet bags for travel.

  • A researched and documented plan for the rearing of your child, which should include but not be limited to: discipline, diet, exercise, crib bumper philosophy, sun exposure, cry solution, sleep location, babysitter preferences,  etc.
  • A really big trash can in case you need to throw that document away.  Just in case, you know.

  • High chair that attaches to a chair, for the sake of all things space related.  This one is great because it lays back when they are small.

image

  • Something to strap them into when you need to take your once a week shower.  I like small and simple so I could move it from room to room.   Something like this.  My kids liked the music and the vibration, but weren’t crazy about swinging.

  • Warm booties that stay on.  We loved these Zutano’s and my kids wore them until they started walking.  Forget about the shoes before then! image
  • Some help, for goodness sake.  Here is where your village really shines.  Ask for it, anticipate your needs, and accept offers to help. You were not meant to do this alone!
