Anybody have a baby with a tender tushie? I certainly do! After 2 horrible yeast infections in about 2 months time I decided that I needed to change something. I was thinking about going all the way to cloth diapering (yes, I use disposables and contribute to the world’s landfill problem) but why not start with changing out my wipes first.
I thought I was already giving him the most natural wipe out there but just because it says “All Natural” or “Just like Nature” doesn’t mean a thing. Now that I think about it, what the heck does that mean? Is it just like water or a leaf or water on a leaf? Anyway, I digress.
I’m happy to say that my baby’s booty has been infection free since I’ve started to make my own baby wipes. Maybe the wipes were the cause, maybe not, maybe it’s just coincidence. Who knows! Who cares! If you’re interested in making the switch here is a step by step tutorial on how to do it yourself. So super easy it only takes like 3 minutes.
Step 1: Cut a roll of paper towels in 2. (I like to use “Viva”, they seem to be thicker and hold up during wiping, but it’s really your choice.)
Step 2: Place 1 of the rolls into a container that has a top. (I used an old juice pitcher but you can use any kind of canister or 5 pound coffee container you get at the grocery store.)
Step 3: Mix together the next 3 ingredients:
1 ½ cups of HOT Water
1 Tablespoon Baby Bath Wash (whatever you use to wash your baby with in the bath is fine, no need to buy anything special)
1 Teaspoon Oil (you can use mineral oil, baby oil, or a blend of essential oils like me. I’m currently using Kissaluvs Diaper Lotion Potion which is a blend of witch hazel, jojoba, lavender, chamomile, & tea tree oils)
Step 4: Pour mixture over the wipes
Step 5: Carefully pull out the cardboard paper towel roll (it should remove easily now that it’s wet)
Step 6: Let sit for about 15 minutes, pull wipes from the center, and keep covered
Voila! Easy squeezy for a squeaky clean baby bum!

I got a ton of wipes at my baby shower so I just saved the containers cause I knew when I used them all up I was going to try my hand at homemade wipes. It’s a great way to recycle them and they were made to hold wipes so I just cut my paper towels down to size. First time trying this so fingers crossed! I can’t wait to try them!
Jenny, I’ve heard of this happening. Not sure if I’m doing something differently or just going through them too quickly for them to mold. Knock on wood we’ve had no mold issues here.
I did this with my daughter (now three) but if they didn’t get used fast enough (or maybe it was my choice of container… plastic coffee can with lid, or water not hot enough? I have no idea) they got moldy and I got nervous. Great idea, wish I had mastered it. Instead I support our friends at Seventh Generation.
